Craig Richards and Margaret Larson in the Apple Gallery

Aug 10-31

Craig Richards and Margaret Larson in the Apple Gallery The Stokes County Arts Council presents a joint exhibit with artists Craig Richards and Margaret Larson in The Apple Gallery, 500 Main Street, Danbury. An opening reception and artist meet and greet is being held Saturday, August 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Craig Richards is the founding member of Triad Outdoor Painters and one of two artists in residence at The Arts Place of Stokes. His paintings are in oils reflecting a style influenced by French and American Impressionists like Monet and Frederick Church. His subjects are often mountain views, streams, and landscapes though he also works with portraits. Richards partnered with the Stokes County Historical Society to paint “Back In the Day,” a portrait of model Ellen Wallis wearing an ornate green velvet gown circa 1910-1920 donated to the SCHS in 2006 by Michael Joyce. Using the museum and period furnishings, including a circa mid 1800’s settee from the Wilson Fulton House, he has beautifully captured the beginning of a time of dramatic change for women in the early 1900’s. This portrait is on display in the exhibit and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the portrait and prints will go directly to the Stokes County Historical Society. Joining Richards for this exhibit is ceramic artist Margaret Larson, whose work was recently featured at the Guilford College Art Department’s senior thesis exhibition. She creates large hand-built ceramic pots with local North Carolina clay and uses painting and carving techniques to add enlarged floral imagery to the surfaces. She cites the ideas of femininity, strength, and taking up space as inspiration for her art, while commenting on the intersection of fine arts and craft and how women are viewed in the art world. “I make this work as a tribute to my own and other women’s creation of craft, and to their, and my own strength and delicacy, “ Larson said. Visit the Apple Gallery at 500 Main Street to view this exhibit, on display until the end of August. Meet Richards and Larson at the opening reception on Saturday, August 10th beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more about each of the artists, visit their websites at www.artistcraigrichards.com and www.margaretlarsonpottery.weebly.com.

Laurelyn Dossett to Perform at The Arts Place of Stokes

Aug 25

If you aren’t familiar with singer and composer Laurelyn Dossett, you need to be. One of the most sought-after voices in creative collaborations, she co-founded Polecat Creek with singing partner Kari Sickenberger, and has partnered with Triad Stage's Preston Lane on three plays featuring regional folklore and original music: Brother Wolf, Beautiful Star: An Appalachian Nativity, and Bloody Blackbeard. Dossett is also a regular performer at regional music festivals such as Merlefest, a guest on the radio show Prairie Home Companion, and a writer and performer with the North Carolina Symphony. Two years ago Dossett took part in the Danbury Songwriters series at The Arts Place of Stokes. “I remember telling the audience how much I loved Stokes County, and joked that if someone found me a place I would move.” With the encouragement of the Stokes County Arts Council that’s exactly what she did and she returns to The Arts Place on Sunday, August 25th for her first show as a Stokes County resident. Joining Dossett on stage will be Alex McKinney playing Dobro and Scott Manring on Banjo and Guitar. Doors open at 4:00, show begins at 5:00 pm at The Arts Place located at 502 Main Street, Danbury. Class of 2020 Leadership Patrick County

Sep 1 - May 31

NOMINATE SOMEONE OR APPLY YOURSELF - DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 3 The Reynolds Homestead is accepting applications for the 2020 class of Leadership Patrick County. This innovative program is designed to develop the leadership potential of citizens in the county. Participants will learn about county government, education, nonprofits, businesses and tourist attractions in Patrick County and broaden their perspectives on civic leadership and community issues through direct interaction with community leaders and agencies in our area. During September 2019 through May 2020, participants will attend monthly day-long meetings focused on different aspects of the community, including trips to different communities within the county. This year, the AIR Shift curriculum will be incorporated into the program to facilitate the development of community projects the participants will create and implement in the coming year. One evening each month, participants will attend a meeting such as a County Board of Supervisors meeting. The program emphasizes professional development with training in team building, collaboration, consensus building, design thinking, project management, communication, leadership styles. The first meeting is an orientation retreat focused on team building, and identifying leadership styles. In January the participants will enjoy an overnight visit to Richmond to meet with our local delegate and senator and savor a meal with Reynolds family members sponsored by the Richard S. Reynolds foundation. The final meeting will be a commencement ceremony, presentation of community projects, and a celebration. The program seeks a group of 12 men and women from diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds, each possessing strong potential as a future community leader. Applicants must be 21 years old or older to participate. If employed, participants are required to have the permission of their employer to participate. Nominations are being sought, and individuals may choose to nominate themselves. Tuition is $150.00. Chamber of Commerce members receive a $25 discount. Tuition covers all meals, transportation to meetings and accommodations for the overnight stay in Richmond. Because it is important that everyone has an opportunity to apply, a limited number of scholarships are available to those who be unable to attend otherwise. Applications should be delivered to the Reynolds Homestead by Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Applications can be submitted via email to jws@vt.edu. The program is limited to 12 participants, so early applications are encouraged. For more information, contact one of the program coordinators: Julie Walters Steele - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 23 or email: jws@vt.edu Lisa Martin - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 22 or email: martinlm@vt.edu Sarah Wray - phone 276.694.7181 ext. 27 or email: wrayse88@vt.edu
